After a movie about the popular doll was in development for years at Sony, Mattel is partnering with Warner Bros. for a feature film with Margot Robbie in talks to star.
Robbie would also produce the project through her LuckyChap banner.
It was first announced in 2014 that Mattel was partnering with Sony for a Barbie movie. In 2016 it was reported that Amy Schumer would star in the movie that was billed as a spin on the classic Barbie mythology on its head, putting a contemporary spin on the toy with an emphasis on feminism and identity. A few months later Schumer dropped out of the project due to “scheduling conflicts.”
It was later reported Anne Hathaway would replace Schumer, with the movie eyeing a June 29, 2018 release that was pushed to August. At the beginning of the year Sony pushed the movie to May 8, 2020.
The rights to Barbie reverted back to Mattel earlier this year.
Sources say that Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins is circling the Warners project but indicate there are no substantive talks or offers that have taken place.
If deals make, the Barbie movie would continue a partnership between Robbie and the Burbank-based studio — Robbie’s LuckyChap banner has a first look deal with Warner Bros. The studio is gearing up for production on Birds of Prey, which Robbie is producing and will see her reprise her DCU role as Harley Quinn.
Robbie, who earned an Oscar nomination for I, Tonya, will next be seen in Mary Queen of Scotts and is currently working on Sony’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. She is repped by CAA, Management 360 and Jackoway Tyerman.
Margot Robbie and Matthias Schoenaerts are attached to star in World War II thriller Ruin.
Justin Kurzel (Assassin’s Creed) will direct Ryan and Matthew Firpo’s Black List topping-script. Marc Butan of MadRiver Pictures is producing alongside Kurzel.
MadRiver’s Ara Keshishian is executive producing alongside Nik Bower and Deepak Nayar of Riverstone Pictures, who are co-financing. CAA Media Finance packaged the film and is handling the U.S. rights while IMR International will handle foreign sales.
Set in the ruins of post-WWII Germany, pic will follow a Holocaust survivor (Robbie) who is forced to make an unlikely alliance with an ex-SS captain (Schoenaerts) in her quest to exact revenge. Together, they hunt down the surviving members of the captain’s former Nazi death squad. Principal photography is slated to begin Q2, 2019 in Prague. Gal Gadot had been in talks for the Robbie role 12 months ago.
Robbie will next star as Queen Elizabeth I in Mary Queen of Scots for Focus Features alongside Saoirse Ronan. She is currently in production on Quentin Tarantino’s One Upon A Time in Hollywood and will next play Harley Quinn in the untitled Birds of Prey film for Warner Bros. Schoenaerts can next be seen in David Oelhoffen’s Close Enemies, which premiered at Venice, Thomas Vinterberg’s Kursk, which is heading to Toronto, and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre’s Mustang, which is due out next year.
Kurzel made his debut directing The Snowtown Murders, followed by Macbeth starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard.

The talent firm’s production company behind ‘Game of Thrones’ and the producer of ‘Ozark’ together will forge a studio to create, acquire, package, sell, produce and finance content.

Management 360’s television production arm is teaming with Media Rights Capital to form an independently staffed studio with the goal of creating and distributing content for the talent management firm.
The partnership will originate, acquire, package, sell, produce and finance original content for distribution on all platforms. The studio will combine the talent roster, IP origination and packaging skills of Management 360’s Entertainment 360 division with MRC’s production, distribution and marketing expertise. Together, the companies will produce and finance scripted and unscripted offerings and create new opportunities for 360’s roster of clients.
The first project under the new Entertainment 360 studio will be an Amazon take on Amy Reed’s YA novel Nowhere Girls, which Management 360 clients Kieran and Michele Mulroney will exec produce alongside Margot Robbie, Brett Hedblom, Josey McNamara, Tom Ackerley and the actress’ LuckyChap (I, Tonya) banner. Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) will direct the drama.
“Joining forces with MRC on Entertainment 360 is the next evolution of our mission to create extraordinary opportunities for artists,” the Management 360 partners said in a joint statement. “MRC’s impeccable taste, depth of infrastructure and resources to expand our production capabilities make them the ideal partner for a new evolution of a studio purpose-built for the current media landscape.”
Entertainment 360 has produced series including HBO’s Game of Thrones, AMC’s The Terror, ABC’s Designated Survivor, Facebook’s Queen America and the features Lady Bird and Steve Jobs.
MRC, meanwhile, is the independent studio behind Netflix’s Ozark and House of Cards, Starz’s Counterpart and such features as Ted and Baby Driver. The company, part of Valence Media, which also owns The Hollywood Reporter, develops, produces and finances film and TV for distributors including Sony, Warner Bros., Universal, Paramount and Fox as well as HBO, ABC, Netflix, Apple and Amazon, among others. MRC was founded by Asif Satchu and Modi Wiczyk, who are now co-CEOs of Valence Media.
“360’s track record speaks for itself, having expertly guided the careers of writers, directors, producers and actors for 15-plus years, and packaging and producing award-winning and commercially successful film and television projects under the Entertainment 360 label,” MRC said in a statement. “We are thrilled to partner in this new collaboration.”
The deal arrives as agencies and management companies have increased their push into content creation as they look to create new opportunities for clients and share in the financial success of projects beyond their traditional 10 percent commissions.
